According to archaeologists, Ancient Egyptians used bangles as long ago as five thousand years before Christ. Most were made out of gold. Plenty of modern ones are still designed from this precious metal; however, they are quite expensive. Fortunately, there are plenty of high quality affordable bracelets in many jewelry stores around the country.

Jewellers use a wide range of materials to make bangles. These range from metal to a variety of plastics. Ultimately, the decision to use a particular type of glass, jewel or any other material depends on a number of factors. Among the main ones are what the armlet will be used for, its expected selling price, whether it has to be custom made or not, and so on. Its vital for consumers to take time and learn about these factors.

Gold remains very popular with consumers in spite of its cost. People love it because it is attractive, does not react adversely with human skin, and stays rust and corrosion free for a long time. In order to create ornaments made out of this metal cheaper, it is mixed with other metals. This also makes it stronger, as pure gold is too soft for day to day use.

A carat is a measure of gold's purity; the more its proportion in a sample, the higher this measure would be. Mixing the precious material with other metals also makes it cheaper, and can be used to change certain attributes, such as color. Armlets made with alloyed gold have one drawback; they need to be polished more often, as they tend to lose their lustre very quickly.

Apart from alloyed gold, another option for low cost and high quality bangles is stainless steel. Most people will be taken aback at this, as they do not associate this metal with jewelry. Craftsmen love its muted lustre, hardness, and ability to resist corrosion. They generally avoid steel made with nickel, as some people are allergic to it.

Another material that is popular with armlet makers is brass. This is actually an alloy, a blend of copper and zinc. Its relatively hard, yet workable. It has a golden colour that is very attractive. Depending on the proportions of copper and zinc used, the material's lustre can range from muted to sparkling.

Plastics remain the number one material for making affordable bracelets. They are popular because they come in a wide range of designs and colors. They are also relatively hard. They do not cause unwanted reactions with the human skin.
